A Legacy of Quality
Selfhelp Realty Group | The Melamid Institute for Affordable Housing ensures that older New Yorkers have access to safe, clean, and affordable housing with access to services that promote healthy aging.
Today, Selfhelp owns and operates 14 affordable housing residences that are home to nearly 1,500 older adults, and provides social work services to additional residences. With seven new projects under construction and pre-development, we’ll be providing safe and affordable housing for even more older New Yorkers soon.
A home is not simply where we live; it is a state of mind where we feel most comfortable, safe and at peace. Stable housing is critical to overall health and wellness. Selfhelp’s developments are not just about housing, they’re about keeping older New Yorkers healthy and resilient.
Unique Real Estate Developer for Seniors
Selfhelp’s unique real estate developments offer low and moderate-income New York seniors the opportunity to age in their home in the neighborhood they love with access to on-site social services. SHASAM, Selfhelp’s Active Services for Aging Model, brings together safe and affordable apartments with our legacy of quality social services.
Selfhelp Realty Group | The Melamid Institute for Affordable Housing serves as the primary entity for Selfhelp’s housing development projects. Ilse Melamid knows that a home is not simply where we live; it is a state of mind where we feel most at peace, feel safe, and welcomed. Housing is a platform for delivering health and social services that make a positive impact on the lives of older adults, as demonstrated by Selfhelp’s Active Services for Aging Model (SHASAM), which has shown positive health outcomes and reduced healthcare spending through extensive research. The Institute will advance affordable housing policies and funding through advocacy opportunities and will also share our best practices and experience as a provider of affordable senior housing for more than sixty years.
WHAT WE DO
Affordable & Sustainable Dwellings
Through the Selfhelp Realty Group | Melamid Institute for Affordable Housing, named for Holocaust survivor and philanthropist Ilse Melamid, Selfhelp is leading the development and preservation of housing with direct access to onsite social services that promote aging with independence and dignity. This model enables older adults to age in their own homes and communities and avoid institutional care, such as nursing homes. A retrospective 3-year study of hospital rates, emergency department use, and cost of care of Selfhelp residents compared to other older adults living in the same zip codes showed that Selfhelp residents experienced a significant improvement in health outcomes as well as cost savings to Medicare and Medicaid.
