City officials recognized a Flushing senior center on Thursday for its ongoing commitment to preparing older adults for emergencies.

Councilman Paul A. Vallone on Monday, October 7 was joined by Selfhelp Vice President of External Relations and Communications Sandy Myers and local seniors to announce that the Selfhelp Community Services free senior transportation program will begin again on October 10.

A free senior transportation program is back for the fourth year and is one again expanding its reach to the elderly across all of Queens.

Seniors living in northeast Queens will get free rides to and from the doctor’s office starting Oct. 10, when Selfhelp Community Services’ free transportation program returns for another season.

Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D,WFP-Fresh Meadows) thanked volunteers at the Selfhelp Senior Center in Flushing for their efforts and community service. Rozic had the opportunity to acknowledge Ray Joss, who at 100 years old is the oldest volunteer this year. Rozic works with the Selfhelp Senior Center throughout the year and has provided funding for their Holocaust Survivor Services program.

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz paid a visit on June 4 to the Selfhelp Austin Street Senior Center in Forest Hills – one of five Selfhelp locations in Queens – to meet with some of the seniors served by the facility, and to discuss issues that impact elderly Queens residents.

With their big performance just days away, it’s time to tighten up their salsa routine.
