For people recovering from COVID-19, home care can be both essential and elaborate, involving a health care professional who provides additional oxygen, monitors vital signs, administers medication and helps with daily tasks such as eating, bathing and getting in and out of bed.

In recent years, students have gained the ability to acquire a high-quality education from the comfort of their own homes. From a high school diploma to a four-year college degree, students can attend class, take tests, and complete projects without leaving their room. It’s a great option for those who live far from school or learn better in the comfort of their own space.

A special group of Holocaust survivors recently gathered at the Senior Planet Exploration Center in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood to mark the end of a 25-week program that brought them together…and into the digital age.

One of the more interesting activities in which I participate, is the virtual senior center at Self Help in New York City. This organization, founded as a support for aging Holocaust survivors, and now reaches across all communities in the metropolitan area, realized that one of the issues that effects the elderly the most is loneliness.

While aging often presents physical challenges, mental health can also suffer. Social isolation is rampant among older adults who lose mobility, lack transportation options or live alone or away from family. The impact of isolation is severe. Don’t underestimate it.

You might not walk down a city street to meet a friend or go to your local community center without fixing yourself up a bit first. So if you never go out, where’s the incentive?
