Technology FAQ

How does Selfhelp use new technologies to help seniors live independently and securely?
Selfhelp implements a variety of technological innovations that enable us to monitor our clients’ overall health and safety from a distance. Our use of remote sensor technology and telehealth devices can provide our staff of registered nurses and social workers with information about our clients’ activities and well being. Our use of these 21st century technologies enable our clients to remain in their homes and maintain their independence with the knowledge that they are being protected and cared for. Selfhelp’s cognitive stimulation systems add to our clients’ sense of well being, enhancing their memory and mental agility and helping them stay mentally fit.

What are the main advantages of using these technologies?
As more and more elderly people desire to remain in their homes, they are looking for cost effective ways to do so. Client centered technologies provide high quality service from a distance, promoting independence. Remote sensor and telehealth technologies enable staff to monitor our clients and take action on potentially threatening situations.

How does remote sensor technology work?
Remote sensor technology transforms elder care with advanced motion sensor technology that learns how seniors live and sends alerts when out-of-the-ordinary events occur. For example, if a senior does not leave the bedroom in the morning, an alert will be generated and staff and caregivers will be notified. Problems are identified before they become emergencies and in the case of real emergencies, the call center will notify your designated contacts and staff members. Remote sensor technology provides a unique opportunity for seniors to live on their own.

What is telehealth?
Telehealth services enable our staff to monitor our clients’ overall health and well being from a distance. Telehealth devices collect biometric data from our clients to convey the information to Selfhelp. Electronic blood pressure cuffs, glucose meters, medication reminders and weight scales send information directly to our registered nurses. These technologies enable elderly and chronically ill clients to maintain ongoing contact with professional caregivers without giving up their independence. Remote monitoring by our registered nurses helps patients stay healthy by identifying problems before they become emergencies.

I live far away from my parents and worry about their health and safety. Can you help with long distance support?
Whether you live across the street or across the country, you and your parents will benefit from the monitoring provided by our client centered technologies. Our innovative use of sensor and telehealth technologies are at the heart of Senior Source’s care management program, playing a key role in enabling seniors to live securely at home. Our telehealth system can run through an array of daily medical tests, sending information to our registered nurses and social workers. If there’s a change in your parents’ overall health, the Senior Source staff will provide quick intervention. Our remote sensor technology provides additional peace of mind, sending alerts for out-of-the- ordinary situations that could indicate emergencies.

What kind of programs do you offer at Selfhelp’s computer learning centers?
Our computer learning centers offer computer classes that teach seniors the basics of using computers from learning how to send emails to stay in touch with family and friends, to learning how to use the Internet for fun and research. We also offer advanced computer programs for seniors who want to learn about computer graphics, digital photography, blogging or how to search for jobs.

Please explain your cognitive stimulation programs.
As people age, their memory and other cognitive abilities begin to decline. Dakim’s Brain Fitness systems are offered at five locations in Selfhelp’s housing complexes and senior centers. These advanced computer systems engage seniors in cognitive stimulation and learning activities that enhance memory, mental agility and overall well being. These programs have also been found to be useful for clients who are suffering from dementia or the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
