The Guthery Institute of Training is a hands-on learning center for home health aides and personal care aides. Students progress from the classroom, with its core curriculum and health related tasks, to clinical skills in the laboratory and field training in clients’ homes. Upon graduation, students are ready to begin their careers as New York State Department of Health approved home health aides.
The Guthery Institute of Training program takes two to three weeks based on the level of certification desired. The learning center also provides a competency evaluation program for certified aides who wish to seek employment at Selfhelp Community Services, Inc. Continuous in-service training and classes are offered so home health aides can keep up to date on the newest health care practices, enhance their skills and fulfill ongoing certification requirements.
Selfhelp prides itself on its commitment to training programs like our Spanish initiative, Manos Que Ayudas. In addition to providing language appropriate aides to our Spanish-speaking clients, this innovative mentorship program helps low-income Spanish speaking women obtain training that will enable them to support themselves and their families.
Selfhelp’s paraprofessionals are continually encouraged to advance their careers with opportunities for our aides to become training associates, certified nursing assistants and nurses.
